Director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Elephant, Paranoid Park) tackles another fiction-based story, starring Sean Penn (Mystic River, I Am Sam) in his Golden Globe nominated role as an openly gay city politician.
Harvey Milk (Penn) moves from New York to San Francisco to open a camera shop, which leads to a salon for San Fran's gay community.
Shortly after, Milk is gaining in political prowess and working on civil rights.
The rise and fall of Milk is captured brilliantly by Penn, who has been a regular during the Hollywood awards season for some time.
The supporting cast, featuring James Franco as Milk's partner and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn), provides sincerity and humility to the film.
Never afraid to take on any controversial material, Van Sant successfully portrays Milk's work as a hugely significant moment in history.
